Conclusion

There are unique different characteristics in manga of each generation, which implicitly presents the transitions of female figures and roles. In fact, shōjo manga depicts typical womanliness, such as weakness, elegance, and cuteness. Such stereotyped ladylike elements affect women’s perspectives to be feminine. At the same time, however, women’s perspectives affect the contents of shōjo manga. Thus, shōjo manga and women’s perspectives are closely related. In shōjo manga, the linguistic usage is one of the significant elements that shows gender division. Moreover, the number of characters’ lines and appearances in both shōjo and shōnen manga also present gender division. On the other hand, gender equality can be seen in manga and among its readers, because more gender-neutral language is employed recently, and female readers started to enjoy manga for men. Overall, manga has been a large part of our culture that not only entertains the audiences, but also reflects important inner aspects of women and gender.
